When Washington Comes Knocking

October 20, 2026

I spent nearly a decade as a political reporter and editor, watching more than one company’s bad week turn into a bad year under the hearing room lights. The midterms are just weeks away, and a divided government is all but certain. That means investigations and congressional oversight, and a lot of it. A new majority and a crowded freshman class will bring new priorities, and members eyeing 2028 know a well-timed hearing and a testy exchange can put them on the map.

That’s why we are launching The LSG Oversight to help companies prepare for when Washington comes knocking. It covers the full arc of congressional and regulatory scrutiny — from the first warning signs to the hearing room to the headlines. Scrutiny can — and will — come from all corners. All 36 standing congressional committees can hold hearings, request documents, and issue subpoenas.

So, come January, even previously safe industries will likely be on the menu. Issues spanning immigration policy; affordability, including fuel prices, housing, and health care; trade and tariffs; food and drug and product safety; competition and market safety; and more. Politics and new power centers will be the name of the game.

The companies and organizations that prepare now will have the best outcomes.

The ones that don’t will be left scrambling — putting their businesses, policy priorities, and reputations at risk.

What sets LSG apart is how we think: a campaign and political mindset built from working for the members and committees calling companies to testify, covering these investigations as reporters, and leading advocacy campaigns on hot-button issues. That expertise is paired with our 50-state network of field operatives that can be deployed on a dime and an in-house research team to test every strategy.

The bottom line: The 120th Congress will bring more than just scores of new members and new gavel holders. It will bring a level of scrutiny that we’ve perhaps not seen before.
